General
requirements for cereal seed:
Seed
treatment is becoming a strong alternative to field
spraying due to the method being both
environmentally and user friendly. Seed treatment is
safer, both for people and the environment. The
amount of active ingredient can be minimized thanks
to precise dosage and application with our Rosengren-machines.
This inturn means that plant protection will become
more profitable.
Different manufacturers are conducting intense
product development both of conventional and
biological seed treatment products. Today we are
even better equipped to partake in the development
of machines, systems, materials and formulations and
we look forward to further reinforcing and improving
relations with our customers.
The Seed shall:
Have a high
purity and germination.
Have the best
possible seed health.
Be well sorted
and cleaned.
Be storable.
Plant Production
and Harvest:
Use certified
seed.
Use well cleaned
sowing machine to avoid contamination.
Don't overdo the
nitrogen fertilisation.
Treat against
diseases and weeds.
Use well cleaned
and adjusted harvesting machine to avoid
contamination and seed damage.
Drying and storage:
At a water
content higher than 16% dry immediately.
Never use a
higher drying temperature than 60 C0.
At storage the
water content may never exceed 15%.
Well cleaned
dryers and storage to avoid contamination.
Analyse:
Analyse of raw
seed per at least 60-70.000 kg.
Water content
must be controlled directly after harvest to
decide if drying is necessary.
The water
content must be controlled before drying.
Germination must
be controlled before cleaning..
Seed health test
before seed treatment. If no seed health test
has been done treat the seed.
Germination test
after cleaning and seed treatment per 25 -
30.000 kg.
Cleaning and seed treatment:
A well cleaned
and sorted seed contains only seed of
approximately the same size.
Big seeds give a
more even and better emergence.
Avoid seed
damage at transport, storage and seed treatment.
To achieve a
good seed treatment dust and other impurities
must be taken away with a good air cleaning
& separation system.
Germination:
The seed purity can
be improved with a more effective cleaning and
sorting/separation. An infected seed can be
disinfected by seed treatment.
Reasons for a bad germination:
Use of
unsuitable herbicide or spraying at wrong time.
Field
germination. Occurs some years, difficult to do
anything about.
Incautious
harvesting. The risk increases at low water
content.
Over heating at
storage i.e. the raw seed has not been dried in
time or enough, which makes the temperature
arise and the embryos dye.
Too high drying
temperature.
Incautious
transport and too hard cleaning.
Seed- and soil
borne diseases and pests.
The wrong seed
treatment has been used & choosen or uneven
treatment.
